Operation Shoebox Sends Supplies to Afghanistan
On May 14, 2008, the SHA sophomore class brought in 80 boxes full of supplies for the troops stationed in Afghanistan, in particular, my dad's Army National Guard troops. The students brought in shoeboxes in the morning and that afternoon many stayed and helped repack all the shoeboxes into new boxes able to be sent overseas. Not only sophomores helped out, but many freshman also helped pack. These boxes held items like toiletries, snack food, and office supplies which the soldiers cannot get for themselves. In addition, each sophomore wrote a note to the soldiers thanking them for their service and packed it with the supplies. With the help of Mr. Nicholas Kester, the boxes will be sent to Afghanistan to my dad's troops. -Amy Spohr

Read On
On Thursday, May 1st, at a reception held at the Barnes and Noble in Carle Place, Meg Schneider, a SHA junior, was awarded first place in an essay contest sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Nassau County Library Association. In her essay, Meg focused on the reasons she believes the computer and the Internet are valuable resources that will take reading and the discussion of reading into the 21st century. The computer has positively affected Meg's access to books, book reviews, book discussions and contact with authors. Meg writes monthly young adult book reviews for the teen section of the Rockville Centre Public Library's website. After reading and loving Enthusiasm by Polly Schulman, Meg wrote a rave review which Ms. Schulman found on the Internet. As a result of Meg's review, Ms. Schulman chose the RVC Public Library as the first stop on her book tour. As Meg stated, "It was a great experience that could never have happened without the computer!"

"A Heart of Gold"
Meg Schneider '09 truly possesses a heart of gold. Meg was recently recognized by the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation (LIAF) at its Fourteenth Annual Outstanding Service Awards Luncheon. As the youngest honoree, Meg was recognized for her dedication, caring and compassionate service to those stricken with Alzheimer's disease.

Meg began visiting the Reminiscence Unit of the Sunrise Senior Living of North Lynbrook five years ago when her aunt was a resident there. For the past two years, Meg has used her gift of music to entertain and connect with the residents in the Reminiscence Unit. Every Saturday morning, Meg regales the residents with nursery songs and Broadway show tunes. Her music has had a tremendous impact on all those who have heard her play. In fact, one woman, who had never been heard to speak, joyfully sang along with Meg's piano playing!

The theme of this year's LIAF luncheon was "A person‚s heart is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others." By this standard, Meg Schneider's heart is enormous. Meg hopes to continue helping people with dementia in whatever capacity she can.

Our Holy Father's enduring message of hope

By Katherine Klaric

In a world riddled with violence, greed, and war, the legacy of hope is often forgotten.
The ever-present turmoil surrounding us provides formidable opposition to the pursuit of hope; yet, under the prominent guidance of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, youth across our nation can find it simple to relax in the comfort of God’s salvation. Pope Benedict XVI defines “hope” as synonymous with “faith.” Hence, it can be deduced that hope is a vital aspect of our religion.
Our lives, even as adolescents, are far from simple in the 21st century. Nonetheless, as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us in his second encyclical, the “intimate relationship between prayer and hope” cannot be ignored. Al-though we are not each capable of transforming our world into one of quietude and righteousness, it is only through devotion to prayer and hope that we can do our part in bettering our community.
Our God-given human dignity gives us the ability to recognize right from wrong, and thus the ability to conduct ourselves accordingly. It is imperative that every individual acknowledges his or her reason for living and subsequently decides to fulfill his or her responsibilities. As a teenager, both my peers and I are still learning the history of our Church; by learning our past, we become better prepared for the future. The pope, through his addresses to the Catholic community, has furthered our education on matters once taught by the saints and martyrs. In “Spe Salvi,” our pontiff stresses the value of the endless attention God offers to each human. A relationship with God, strengthened through daily prayer, allows for the purification of a troubled conscience. Even in a time when we feel utterly isolated and alone, God’s presence enables us to reflect on our character and, in effect, ameliorate our situation. This level of enlightenment, however, demands absolute intimacy with our Lord; there is little room for inhibition or doubt. Prayer, the process of communicating desires or thanks to God, allows us to clearly recognize our goals in life. Hope, prayer, and work are crucial in order for us to meet and overcome the challenges of our society.
In hope, the early Christians were formed; through hope, the devout martyrs of our faith received salvation; and by hope, we too can aspire to achieve greatness in both this life and the next. Suffering will always be an undeniable element of human life; prayer and faith will always be the unquestionable solution.
It is a great honor to all Catholics in America that we are able to pray with the Holy Father in our own neighborhoods and communities. His infallible advice and wise counsel prove indispensable to those struggling through difficulties. Growing up in Germany, Pope Benedict XVI experienced first hand the aggression that consumed the Nazis. Nevertheless, he emerged as a devout Catholic, filled with compassion and faith. Who can better testify to the need of hope in times of despair? His past makes it easy for us to relate with his prevailing message of preserving hope through strife.
We live in a time when so many find it hard to remain steadfast in the Catholic practices and beliefs. This nation’s Catholics widely welcome Pope Benedict XVI to our country. We anxiously await his presence and thirst for the hope and inspiration soon to be granted to us.
Katherine Klaric is a junior at Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead.

Reconciliation: Reason to Rejoice

SHA swimmer makes a splash in international competition

By Pete Sheehan Senior Reporter Long Island Catholic reprinted with permission
Hempstead — When Emily Kelly was six years old, she tagged along when her mother took her older brother to Long Beach to try out for a swim club.“While I was there, I tried out, too,” said Emily, a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church in Belle Harbor, Queens, and a sophomore at Sacred Heart Academy here. That trip to Long Beach was the beginning of a journey to places she never imagined, such as Melbourne, Australia, where she competed in the Junior Olympics in January. Now, it may even take her to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Competing against swimmers her age from all over the world in Australia, Emily qualified for the Olympic trials in the 200-yard freestyle. In addition, she finished second in the one-mile freestyle competition with a time of 16 minutes and 51 seconds.“That didn’t qualify me for the Olympic trials,” however, Kelly said, because there is no one-mile freestyle event for the women’s Olympic competition. Still, Emily is hoping for additional chances to qualify for the Olympics trials in another event in a competition in March in Orlando, Florida. Emily’s success in Australia comes as no surprise to her swimming coach at Sacred Heart, Mary White, who has for two seasons watched her excel in local competition for the all-girls school swimming team. “She’s a great kid, and she just keeps getting stronger and stronger,” White said. After a stellar regular season this year, Emily competed in the Catholic High School Athletic Association championship meet in November, against girls’ team from Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens counties. “She was the outstanding swimmer and broke two conference records,” White said. That same month, at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association/ Federation’s state meet for both public and nonpublic school teams, “she won both her events,” the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. Emily set a state record in the 200. “It was only the second time that a nonpublic school swimmer won both events,” White said. The first time was when Emily won the previous year. Kelly competes in the CHSAA championship swim meet last November. Emily’s achievements follow years of practice and competition against the best swimmers. For several years she swam for a Long Beach swim club until her coach advised her to seek stiffer competition by joining the Long Island Aquatic Club. From her participation with the club, she eventually qualified for the junior national team for USA Swimming. “It was always fun, and I liked being with my friends.” Through the Long Island Aquatic Club she met several friends who went to Sacred Heart Academy, including Keri Masterson, a 2006 Sacred Heart graduate and another swimmer who excelled in national competition. She now is a college sophomore swimming for the University of Notre Dame. “Emily loves Sacred Heart,” Coach White said. “And she has done anything that I have asked her,” even with her commitment to the Long Island Aquatic Club and the grueling requirements of their training. Her regimen includes practice before and after school most days of the week. Supportive of her teammates, “she stands on the side and cheers for everyone, particularly in the close races,” White said. Emily also has paced some of her teammates, swimming slower than usual for her to offer a realistic challenge to teammates to qualify for a particular event. “Emily has a great natural clock,” which allows her to swim at the time she sets out to, White said. “Not everyone can do that. “She is an honors student and she is so dedicated to Sacred Heart. When she came home late from Australia, she was in school the next day,” White said. Soon after, she participated in “Red and Gold,” Sacred Heart’s annual competition. “That’s how much she loves Sacred Heart.”

Lessons Learned at SHA
Jennifer Pereira, a SHA junior, wrote a beautiful piece for the LI Catholic's "Youth Voice" column (Feb. 20). In her article, titled Inspired by Habitat for Humanity, Jennifer shares how Sacred Heart has taught her the true meaning of being a Catholic. Through SHA and her work with Habitat for Humanity, Jennifer has been inspired to get more involved with reaching out and helping others. As Jennifer so eloquently puts it "One nice thing really does go a long way, so the next time you have an opportunity to do a nice thing, take advantage of it and see how far it goes."

Sacred Heart Senior & Future Filmmaker!
Sacred Heart Academy (Hempstead, NY) would like to congratulate senior Michelle Charles, of Rosedale, on her acceptance to The William H. Cosby Future Filmmaker Workshop at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Michelle has been identified as a young filmmaker with great promise and is one of only fifteen students selected from a pool of over 150 applicants. Michelle was recommended to the Workshop by Ms. Susan Loucks, of Sacred Heart’s media department. According to Ms. Loucks, Michelle is exceptionally talented. What truly distinguishes Michelle, however, is her quiet confidence and strong sense of self. The Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, one of the premier film programs in the world, will be hosting the workshop. During an intensive 12-week introduction, Michelle will gain hands-on experience in video production techniques and will participate in screenings of important works and discussions with professional filmmakers and Tisch faculty. Congratulations, Michelle!
